A half hour train ride south from Maastricht to the French speaking part of Belgium (Wallonia) takes you into Liège-Guillemins railway station, the main train station in the city of Liège. Liège is third largest city in Belgium and has a very multi-cultural vibe going on. It's also an important hub for travel between Belgium and Germany.
With the expansion of high speed rail across Europe, Liège-Guillemins railway station was built in 2009 as a new station to cater for these trains. While I can't confirm this, I think they also did it to make a statement and boost the somewhat ailing economy of the city. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the station is epic and has put the city on the map of places with must-see architecture.
With a fellow street photographer from Maastricht, I spent nearly a full day taking photos just within the station. It's so unique that no matter how long you spend there you keep finding new angles and features. The light inside also changes constantly depending on where and how bright the sun is. Combined with the usual activity and characters you see in major train stations, it makes for an awesome place to do 'street' photography. I need to come back at night.
